For my day job, I'm privileged to work with a fantastic group of historians, scientists, educators and others in preserving and interpreting the cultural & natural heritage of our region at the Culture & Heritage Museums. One of our museums is Historic Brattonsville, a living history farm that brilliantly displays lifestyles in the Carolina backcountry during the 18th and 19th centuries. Drawing on the wealth of visual inspiration at the site, and from the print media of the period, I'm having a lot of fun working on design for this farm. Here are a few recent illustrations.

Country Roads of York County

I recently had the opportunity to work with the good folks at Social Design House on a project for the York County Visitors Bureau. They commissioned a driving tour of the country roads in western York County, SC. I spent a beautiful autumn day riding around the county with Zan Maddox, taking photos, talking with people and enjoying some good local food. Using the photos from the day as reference, I made a few illustrations for the driving tour brochure. Here are a few:

Olivet Presbyterian Church in McConnells. This building was erected in 1886, the year of the "Great Earthquake" of South Carolina. I always admired this structure on my trips between home and college.

Apples at Windy Hill Orchard & Cider Mill. We keep a stock of their hard cider at the house and always attend the Apple Festival in October.

Black's Peaches on Hwy. 5, right next to Windy Hill. I always stop here for some sweet potatoes, preserves or other local produce on the way to go see my in-laws in Cherokee County.

Mr. John Carter at the historic Hill's Store in the town of Sharon. John showed us around his magnificent 3-story general store. It is one of the most grand structures in the area, and he is one of our best storytellers.

The McGill's Store near King's Mountain. The McGill family has been in the mercantile business here for over 150 years.

We pulled into the Bullock's Creek cemetery to find this man carrying on a South Carolina tradition, barbecue hash. This was served the next day at the Bullock's Creek Tractor Show.

These places & traditions are local treasures, and I'm really thankful for the opportunity to experience them, and hopefully contribute to their preservation.

Black Banjo Reunion

Here's a piece for my friends at the Charlotte Folk Society. A few years ago they helped organize the Black Banjo Then & Now Gathering, a historic event remembering and celebrating the African-American history of the banjo. It was an amazing weekend where I was able to meet national treasures like Joe Thompson and was even able to sit in on some jam sessions between the folks who would become the Carolina Chocolate Drops. The Gathering is happening again this year at Appalachian State University, with a weekend-closer in Charlotte.

The arts collective I'm involved with has been holding Monday night portrait sessions for the last several months at our local Center for the Arts. These are the paintings I've done the last couple of weeks. Both are two-hour studies in Photoshop. I set up the Mac & the Wacom tablet and paint the model from life. The process of making the picture is similar to painting in oils. I start with big brushes, establishing the dark areas first. Then I lay in color, and finally add the highlights.

This is the album cover for my friends the Mason Jar Drinkers. They are preservationists of String Band music from the early 20th century. We've tried to keep their visual identity as period-accurate as possible. The upper left is the South Carolina flag, and the upper right is the snake from the Revolutionary era Gadsden "Don't Tread On Me" flag.

This banner-bearing chick was inspired by an engraving Hunter found in an old farmer's catalog in a library, which he painstakingly copied by hand in order to show me what he was looking for.

This is the CD, which was made to look like a 78 RPM record label. I believe Hunter also saw the word "Vigor" in a farmer's catalog advertisement, and decided it would make a good record label. 041428 is a reference to the date that South Carolina musicians Pink Anderson and Simmie Dooley recorded together.

Second Week of Advent

This one is from Matthew 3, where John the Baptizer is "clearing the highway" for his cousin Jesus. Some call him the last of the Old Testament prophets. This guy ate grasshoppers and wore camel hide...and I'm betting that he had some crazy dreds. Of all the folks in Scripture, he is potentially one of the most visually interesting. Hopefully I'll be able to explore him more in the future.

My third week in New Orleans is underway. The first two weeks have been fairly quiet. There hasn't been an excess of activity yet, which has been good. Plenty of time to enjoy the city and think through whatever it might mean to live here.

Meeting people has been enjoyable, and interesting... One day I met a neighbor. He asked me how I spelled my name. "With a PH," I answered. "Oh! Just like my best friend!" he exclaimed. After a few minutes of conversation he started back toward his porch and said, "Nice to meet you Kevin." Two days later he met me for the first time again, and so I went along with it. "Nice to meet you too."

There is no shortage of interesting characters in the area, and even after two weeks I've seen several people around the city more than once. One of my favorites is Mr. Okra, who drives around in his marvelously decorated truck announcing his fare on a speaker "I have squash, I have watermelon, I have the Mango..."

My neighborhood is a healthy place to contemplate cultural engagement. Everyone is a culture-maker in some way. Basically, as Andy Crouch explains, culture making includes any activity that alters the horizons of the possible for a given group of people. Our neighborhood is populated by many who are relatively materially poor. But even more than that, many of the same people are poor in another sense - they have been convinced that they are incapable of the essentially human task - expanding the horizons of the possible.

For now, I am working on some design projects, leading art activities with kids after school, and working on renovating our church building. Drawings coming soon!

A Founder

So, that dang hurricane changed my moving plans, and I've had a little time to spend here in limbo. Without assignments or jobs, things can get boring - or weird. Two nights ago, I was flipping through a book of founding fathers that my dear friends Kirk and Sarah got me at the National Portrait Gallery this summer. Anyway, since Kirk is a kind of founder in my life, it was decided that he should be painted 18th century style, after Joseph Siffred Duplessis' rendition of Franklin.

The Next Step - New Orleans

This is the community in New Orleans where I'll be moving very soon. I'm going to be spending the next year or so with as an Artist in Residence with St. Roch Community Church. My thoughts and emotions have been very mixed today. I've just moved away from my best friends, and I watched today as the place I'm moving toward easily could have been washed away.

The coming weeks are sure to be challenging, but I am excited about living in a neighborhood. Growing up in rural South Carolina and spending summers in Midtown Manhattan revealed two extremes, but neither provided me with the complexity of a neighborhood. College gave me a better idea, as we were very involved in each others' lives, but still the population was largely one demographic. This time, I'll see what it is like to be involved in the lives of neighbors from different backgrounds, socioeconomic levels, races, and ages. An exciting prospect indeed.

I drew this several months ago - one of my favorite newsmen, Tim Russert, who suddenly died today. As I was growing up, he was a regular voice heard in our living room. A quality journalist and family man, his absence will be notable.

I finally finished up my caricaturized homage to Gilbert Stuart's portrait of John Adams. This week the painting was accepted into the 20th Annual Juried Undergraduate Exhibition.

Looking forward to the DVD release of the new miniseries based on McCullough's Pulitzer-winning biography of the second president. I've always been intrigued by Mr. Adams. It is a shame that even having so great an influence on our country's history, he is so widely unknown.
